Tove Alexandersson Skips European Championship to Focus on Olympics

Swedish orienteering star Tove Alexandersson is abstaining from the European Championship, according to Radiosporten. The 32-year-old, who has taken 17 European Championship medals, instead wants to focus on her effort in ski mountaineering, new Olympic Games discipline in Milan and Cortina next year.

It is on Tuesday that the Swedish team to the European Championship in Belgium is presented, and it will be without Alexandersson. The championship has a sprint focus.

She has closed the orienteering season because there are only sprint competitions left and started aiming for the Olympic Games effort in skimo (ski mountaineering), says Kalle Dalin, national team coach in sprint orienteering, to Radiosporten.

Tove thinks that there are other more fun things to do right now.

That Tove Alexandersson misses a championship is not common.

I think it's the first time, but it's also the first time she has a chance to be at the Olympic Games. Then we all keep our fingers crossed that it will be a fun experience to be at the Olympic Games, says Dalin.

Alexandersson has taken three World Championship medals in ski mountaineering – one of each value.

The orienteering European Championship in Hasselt, Belgium, takes place between August 24 and September 1.
