In October last year, the EU Court of Justice concluded that the International Football Association's (Fifa) transfer rules violate both the free movement and competition legislation in the union.

The main person in the court case is the former French national team midfielder Lassana Diarra. The former Chelsea and Real Madrid player turned to the legal system when he was demanded large amounts by Fifa, after having fallen out with his Russian club Lokomotiv Moskva and left without a "valid reason".

Diarra missed the following season 2014–15 before signing with French Marseille the year after.

After the decade-long legal process, Diarra now wants 730 million kronor in compensation from Fifa. He has previously, among other things, claimed that Fifa's rules have put obstacles in the way of his attempts to find new clubs, which has resulted in lost income.

"I'm doing it for myself, but also for all promising, less well-known players who do not have the economic and psychological resources to challenge Fifa in front of real judges," says Diarra in a statement.
