"Liam James Payne, songwriter and guitarist, former member of One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor in the Palermo district", says the Argentine police in a statement according to AFP.
The police were alerted to the hotel after a call about "an aggressive man who may have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol".
When they arrived, Payne was found in the hotel's courtyard, where he is believed to have landed after falling from the third floor. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Became a Success
One Direction was formed in the British talent show "X-factor" in 2010. In addition to Liam Payne, the band consisted of Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and front figure Harry Styles. The band, which has sold over 70 million records, quickly became one of the world's most popular music acts and topped the charts with hits like "What makes you beautiful", "Drag me down", and "Story of my life".
In 2016, One Direction took a break and has not performed together since then. Instead, the band members focused on their solo careers.
Liam Payne released his debut album as a solo artist, "LP1", in 2019, and as recently as March, the single "Teardrops" was released.
Struggled with Addiction
In parallel with his career, Payne struggled with addiction and revealed in July 2023 that he had recently spent over three months at a rehabilitation clinic. In August last year, he cancelled his planned tour due to a kidney infection.
According to Argentine media, Payne was in Buenos Aires to attend his former bandmate Niall Horan's concert, which took place on October 2.
Liam Payne had a seven-year-old son with his ex-girlfriend Cheryl Ann Tweedy, known by her stage name Cheryl.
