Parents who take children out of school without permission should be able to receive fines. This is what the government wants, which is appointing an investigation to prevent unauthorized school absence. - More adults must take responsibility and shape up, says Minister for Education and Integration Simona Mohamsson.

Today's rules on leave and other school absences do not work as they should, according to the government.

There are far too many cases where parents have booked trips despite the school saying no to leave, says Simona Mohamsson (The Liberals).

More adults must put the children's right to education at the center, ahead of a beach in Thailand.

The investigation will review how the provisions on leave should become clearer and easier to use for principals and school boards.

Fines for parents

But also the possibility of introducing a penalty fee, similar to fines, for parents who take their children on long vacations despite no from the principal. Today, there is a system with a fine, but it is rarely used.

Mohamsson also raises that summer is a time when the risk increases for children to be taken out of Sweden against their will.

We know that forced marriages abroad or that children are sent on so-called upbringing trips occur. We can never tolerate that, says Mohamsson.

Unclear rules, however, mean that schools sometimes wait far too long to report absences in these cases, and cannot be clear to parents about what the consequences will be, according to Mohamsson.

Upper limit

The investigator will also examine whether there is a need for an upper limit on how much leave can be granted.

We cannot continue like this. We cannot have a come-and-go school, says Simona Mohamsson.

How do you think parents will receive this?

I think that the vast majority of parents agree with me that it is important that the school obligation applies to everyone, and that it is important that children are in school so that they can have a good school experience.

The investigation will present its proposals no later than June 17, 2026.
