Sweden is falling behind and is now behind both India and the Philippines in an international climate ranking. The explanation lies in the government's policy.

The list Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) weighs together emissions, share of renewable energy, energy consumption, and climate policy every year. Sweden ends up in 11th place out of the 63 countries and the EU that have been reviewed.

Denmark tops the list in fourth place – no country manages to reach the top three spots. But even countries like India, Morocco, and the Philippines are ranked higher than Sweden, which has dropped eight places in two years.

According to CCPI, Sweden is worsening its position as a result of the reversals in climate policy made by the current government. On the other hand, we are still doing well in terms of renewable energy and emissions.

The list is compiled by the organization Germanwatch and is presented at the ongoing climate summit COP29 in Baku.
