She says that the information about the ground offensive, which Israel has decided on, now also having been initiated, is "extremely serious".

All decisions that lead to the displacement of civilians or changes to the Gaza territory are something that we condemn, says Malmer Stenergard.

She has difficulty seeing that Israel's collective actions would live up to international law.

That's also why we're making such tough demands on Israel and trying to drive it in the EU, says the Foreign Minister.

Received criticism

In a parliamentary debate, the government received criticism from S, MP and V for doing too little for the civilian population in Gaza.

Sweden is one of the countries in the EU that does the most to put pressure on Israel, Malmer Stenergard replied in the debate.

The government's line is that the economic pressure on Israel must increase for Israel to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The Foreign Minister describes the situation as "catastrophic".

The government therefore wants to see proposals from the EU Commission to freeze the trade part of the association agreement with Israel and also supports an existing proposal to suspend Israel's participation in the research cooperation Horizon Europe.

Are in agreement

Malmer Stenergard assures that the government parties are completely in agreement on that line, but states that it is difficult in the EU to get enough majorities for such measures.

Vänsterpartiet's Lorena Delgado Varas criticized Malmer Stenergard for not using the word "genocide" about what is happening in Gaza.

Silent governments are those that are now killing international law, she said.

Malmer Stenergard stated that all countries certainly have an obligation to prevent and prevent genocide, but that it is not governments around the world that are courts in genocide issues.

Sweden's government has a practice, and this goes far back and has also applied to S-led governments, that we do not comment on genocide issues until a court has done so, says the Foreign Minister.
