During the first half of the year, 49,700 children were born, a decrease of 1.7 percent compared to 2024.

"This year, we see the lowest number of births during a first half-year in 23 years", says Guadalupe Andersson, population statistician at SCB, in a press release.

The declining birth rates are one of the reasons why the population growth is still low, according to SCB. At the same time, the Tax Authority has improved the population registration and deregistered more people who no longer live in Sweden.

In total, the number of registered residents in Sweden increased by 5,000 people during the first half of the year and was 10,592,700 people at the mid-year point.
