Left Party Politicians Face Expulsion Amid Media Distrust

Lorena Delgado Varas and Daniel Riazat are on their way to being excluded from the party – but receive support from several heavy Left Party members. On their way into the Riksdag chamber, Delgado Varas does not want to answer any questions. My trust in the media is not that high, she says.

The Left Party has opened expulsion cases against the two members of parliament Daniel Riazat and Lorena Delgado Varas.

Both stated in their respective posts on Facebook on Wednesday that they have been urged by the party to leave all their assignments within a day.

When asked by journalists before a debate in parliament on Thursday, Delgado Varas does not want to answer any questions.

No comments, you can read my social media, she says and adds:

My trust in the media is not that high.

”Sad and outrageous”

In social media, however, both she and Riazat receive support from a number of current and former Left Party leaders.

The Left Party's defense policy spokesperson, member of parliament Hanna Gunnarsson, writes in a comment to Daniel Riazat: ”It's so incredibly sad, sad and outrageous to read this. All support to you, Daniel!”

To TT, Gunnarsson says she will not give any comments.

Former Left Party member Jens Holm, who until 2022 was the party's climate policy spokesperson, writes: ”Extremely outrageous! We want to keep Daniel Riazat and Lorena in parliament and as party comrades”.

In Lorena Delgado Varas' post, former Left Party leader Lars Ohly comments: ”Great sorrow”.

Poor judgment

It was on April 7 that Delgado Varas shared a post on social media where it was claimed, among other things, that "Zionist Jews" control the world through control of politics and banks.

The party leadership believed that Delgado Varas had shown poor judgment on repeated occasions and that she therefore could not represent the Left Party in parliament. In May, she was urged to leave her assignments.

This was criticized by Daniel Riazat, who was then a member of the party board. He called the decision ”one of the biggest scandals in the party's history”.

TT has contacted Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar and the party's party secretary Maria Forsberg. The press service refers to the fact that it is an internal process that is ongoing and that Forsberg has nothing ”new to say at present”.
