"The preliminary investigation against the man has been discontinued today. The preliminary investigation against the woman who was arrested at the same time, suspected of the same crime, is still ongoing," says senior prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist at the National Security Unit.
The man received the news from his defense attorney, lawyer Thomas Olsson, on Wednesday morning.
It was expected. From the beginning, I said I was innocent, says the top military officer to Expressen.
According to defense attorney Thomas Olsson's opinion, there was no substantial basis for the suspicions from the start.
The investigation material presented in connection with the interrogations and detention hearings did not support the suspicions, he says to TT.
Defense Attorney: "No reason to detain"
The suspected top military officer and his FRA-employed wife were arrested in a Säpo-led operation on October 17. Both were detained from October to December last year, until the prosecutor lifted the detention. Now, only the woman in the case is suspected.
We did not think there was any reason to detain him or continue the preliminary investigation. Then why it was driven further and took so long, you'll have to ask the prosecutor about, says the man's defense attorney.
The previously suspected man has held several key positions within the Defense Forces, both in Sweden and abroad. Periodically, he has worked with connections to the Military Intelligence and Security Service (Must). His wife was employed by the Defense Radio Establishment (FRA) at the time of the arrest.
The man still has his employment at the Defense University but has not worked since the arrest in October.
