The exclusion of the two top politicians Daniel Riazat and Lorena Delgado Varas will be a test of fire for the Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar. This means political scientist Ulf Bjereld. It is a concern for the Left Party that they show division in this issue, he says.

According to the Social Democrat-affiliated political scientist Ulf Bjereld, there are mainly two reasons why the V leadership is acting against the two members of parliament, despite the fact that it stirs up emotions within parts of the party.

The first is that they want to appear as capable of governing and facilitate cooperation with the other opposition parties ahead of the election campaign in 2026, he says.

”Behaved disloyally”

He sees it as the party choosing to "rip off the band-aid" now to avoid having the issue hanging over them in the election campaign.

The second reason, according to Bjereld, is that the party leadership believes that Delgado Varas and Riazat have behaved disloyally towards the party, that they are disrupting the party and that there is therefore internal dissatisfaction with them.

It is primarily about their statements and actions in the opinion formation surrounding the Palestine issue. They think from the party leadership that "enough is enough", he says.

V acted against Delgado Varas already in April after she shared a post on social media where it was claimed, among other things, that "Zionist Jews" control the world through control of politics and banks.

The party leadership believed that she had shown poor judgment on repeated occasions and that she therefore could not represent V in the parliament.

”Hold together”

Daniel Riazat, who was then a member of the party board, called the decision "one of the biggest scandals in the party's history".

In social media, both former and current V politicians have shown their support for Riazat and Delgado Varas.

According to Bjereld, it is a concern for the Left Party that they are showing division on the issue.

And then you come to Nooshi Dadgostar. A party leader's most important task is to hold their party together, this situation becomes a test of fire for her, he says.
