A 19-year-old man suspected of a knife attack at the Holocaust memorial in Berlin on Friday had an anti-Semitic motive, according to German police and prosecutors.
Initially, the investigation suggests that the attack was linked to the conflict in the Middle East and the man wanted to "kill Jews", according to the authorities.
The 19-year-old suspect came to Germany in 2023 from Syria and was granted asylum. The man is not known to the Berlin police previously, and his mental health status is being mapped out by the investigators.
The stabbed man – a 30-year-old Spanish tourist – was taken to hospital injured. He suffered life-threatening injuries to the neck but after the operation, his condition is stable.
