Massive floods have hit northwestern Romania. At least three people have been killed and hundreds have been evacuated, local authorities announced on Monday.

A 66-year-old man was found dead in a riverbed in the Suceava province after several flooded rivers swept away everything in their path following a severe rainstorm in the country. Also, an 89-year-old woman and an 85-year-old man died as a result of the floods in the province.

Rescue workers are searching for more victims. About 890 inhabitants have been evacuated from the affected areas, some by helicopter. Roads have been blocked by debris, bridges have been destroyed and trees have been uprooted with roots.

According to local authorities, several villages are cut off. It is too early to estimate the extent of the damage, but a "significant number" of homes have been damaged.
