”It provides direct cash benefits to families across the country, which contributes to reducing the burden of raising children”, said China's state-owned TV company CCTV and referred to a decision taken by the ruling government.

The country's population has decreased for three years in a row and according to the UN's demographic models, the population can decrease from today's 1.4 billion to 800 million by 2100.

In 2024, 9.54 million children were born, which is half as many as in 2016, the year when the one-child policy that applied in the country for over three decades was abolished. Last year's low birth rate was one of the reasons why India took over China's place as the world's most populous country.

The nationwide benefits apply retroactively from January 1.
