At least 16 people have been killed and over 80 have been injured in an attack on a Ukrainian prison in Zaporizhzhia during the night, according to the Ukrainian police.
At least 43 prisoners are being treated in hospital with serious injuries after the attack, 40 others are reported to have suffered varying degrees of injury.
Prison buildings were destroyed but no escapes have been reported. Residential buildings in the vicinity were damaged, according to the region's governor Ivan Fedorov. A total of eight Russian attacks are said to have been directed at the Zaporizhzhia region.
Ukrainian officials condemn the attack and call it a war crime to target civilian infrastructure, such as prisons.
"Putin's regime, which also issues threats to the USA through some of its spokespeople, must face economic and military blows that deprive it of the ability to wage war", writes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi's adviser Andrei Yermak on X on Tuesday morning.
In an attack on Kamyanske in the Dnipropetrovsk region, three people were killed, including a pregnant woman, and several were injured, Zelenskyi announced. In attacks on the Kharkiv region, six people are said to have been killed.
Ukraine is also reported to have carried out drone attacks on the Rostov region in southern Russia and killed one person, according to the Russian region's governor.
