At least 17 people have been killed and over 80 have been injured in an attack on a Ukrainian prison in Zaporizjzja during the night, according to Ukraine's prison authority.
At least 42 prisoners are being treated in hospital with serious injuries after the attack, 40 others are reported to have sustained varying degrees of injury.
Prison buildings were destroyed but no escapes have been reported. Residential buildings in the vicinity were damaged, according to the region's governor Ivan Fedorov. A total of eight Russian attacks are said to have been directed at the Zaporizjzja region.
Ukrainian officials condemn the attack and call it a war crime to target civilian infrastructure, such as prisons.
"Putin's regime, which also issues threats to the USA through some of its spokespeople, must face economic and military blows that deprive it of the ability to wage war", writes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj's advisor Andrej Jermak on X on Tuesday morning.
In an attack on Kamjanske in the Dnipropetrovsk region, three people were killed, including a pregnant woman, and several were injured, reports The Kyiv Independent. In attacks on other communities in the same region, at least two people were killed according to local authorities.
Ukraine is also reported to have carried out drone attacks on the Rostov region in southern Russia and killed one person, according to the Russian region's governor.
