In many places in Beijing, the power has been cut off and cars have been washed away due to flooding. Over 80,000 people have been evacuated only in the capital in connection with the rainstorm, according to local media.
China's president Xi Jinping has urged the authorities to plan for the worst possible scenarios and accelerate the evacuation in flood-threatened areas.
Intensive rainfall has hit several areas in northern China this week, including the capital and the provinces Hebei, Jilin and Shandong. Many roads have been closed and over 130 towns are without power as a result of the bad weather.
