”We advise against traveling in the area”, writes geologist Gustav Pless at the Norwegian Water and Energy Authority (NVE) in a press release.
The mountain is moving at about 1.5 centimeters per hour, according to NVE. A potential avalanche will not reach buildings, but it can be dangerous for hikers in the area. The authority began monitoring the area in mid-July after several rockfalls and landslides occurred on the mountain.
The unstable area in Innerdalen stretches from 800 to 1150 meters above sea level and covers approximately 120,000 square meters. The volume that may come loose is estimated to be between two and four million cubic meters.
NVE and Sunndal municipality recommend that people stay away from the area for the time being.
