At least 18 people have been killed in a bus accident in eastern India. The bus, which was transporting Hindu pilgrims, collided with a truck loaded with gas cylinders. Images from the accident show a nearly completely burned-out bus.
Local authorities in the state of Jharkhand reported that the pilgrims were on their way to a Hindu shrine to celebrate a holiday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his "deepest condolences to the families of the faithful who lost their lives.”
Traffic accidents are common in India. In 2023, more than 172,000 people were killed, according to official figures.
