A kilo of flour can cost equivalent to around 580 Swedish kronor, a kilo of lentils about 330. These are prices that many in Gaza cannot afford if they do not have savings left after over 21 months of war.
Flour sacks on markets often have UN logos. Others come from the Israeli-American organization Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). Both types have initially been distributed for free.
"Strong and fast"
Heba Jouda, who has been to the distribution sites several times, says that armed men steal aid when others have come across such, and that vendors usually offer to buy.
To get food from the American organization, you have to be strong and fast, she says.
A man says he has visited GHF's distribution sites around 40 times and almost always managed to get food. Most of it he has sold on - to be able to get other necessary goods for his family.
Armistice
According to the UN's food program (WFP), aid can only be delivered to those most in need when security is restored - which is unlikely to happen until an armistice is in place.
Since May, over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed in search of food, mainly near GHF's distribution sites, according to information from the UN's human rights office, witnesses, and local healthcare representatives. According to the Israeli military, shots have been fired when people have approached Israeli soldiers, while GHF has stated that the organization's security personnel have only used pepper spray or shot into the air on a few occasions.
