Nigerian Bandits Kill 33 Hostages Despite Ransom Payment

Armed gangs referred to as "bandits" in Nigeria's northwestern state of Zamfara have killed at least 33 people they kidnapped in February despite receiving the equivalent of over 300,000 kronor in ransom, local authorities and residents said on Monday.

”The bandits released only 18 of the 51 people they kidnapped from our village and when we asked (the released hostages) about the 33 others they said they had been killed by their kidnappers”, said a resident of the village Banga to AFP.

The local political official Mannir Haidara confirms to AFP that several of the kidnapped have been killed but does not want to disclose how many.

The regions in central and northern Nigeria are regularly affected by violence, including clashes between farmers over grazing and water rights. The conflict has created gangs of so-called bandits, mostly consisting of herders, who carry out deadly raids on villages to steal livestock and burn homes.
