The 31-year-old Australian soccer star, national team captain and Chelsea striker is on trial for racist insults against a police officer after an incident in southwest London at the end of January 2023.
Kerr and her American partner, West Ham midfielder Kristie Mewis, were driven to Twickenham police station by a taxi driver after a night out. Intoxicated, they then got into a dispute with the police. This week, the case is being heard in court, Kingston Crown Court, and on Wednesday, Kerr gave her account of what happened. She claims that the taxi driver has a large share of the blame.
I feared for my life. All thoughts went through my head about being in a car with a stranger I considered dangerous. It was impossible to reason with him. It was his way or nothing, says Sam Kerr to a jury.
According to the taxi driver, Kerr and Mewis refused to pay for the cleaning costs of the car after the ride. One of them also allegedly smashed a car window. The couple claims that the driver did not stop the car when they wanted.
After the incident, at the police station, Kerr allegedly became aggressive and started harassing the police. She called a police officer, among other things, "stupid and white".
