Six men are sentenced to death in Iran, accused of being behind a murder of a member of Iran's notorious militia Basij.
The Basij member was stabbed in the Ekbatan area of Tehran in November 2022, in connection with protests against the regime that were triggered when 22-year-old Mahsa Zhina Amini died after being taken into police custody for not being considered to have followed the strict hijab rules sufficiently.
Hundreds of Iranians were killed in connection with the protests, and ten people have been executed for charges related to the protests.
Iran is one of the countries in the world that executes the most people – often after arbitrary trials and confessions that, according to human rights organizations, are extracted under torture. So far in 2024, over 650 people have been executed, according to the Norway-based human rights organization Iran Human Rights.
