Armenia and Azerbaijan undertake to forever cease all hostilities, open up for trade, travel and diplomatic relations and respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, said Trump during the signing.

The now signed peace agreement also aims to create a new trade and transit corridor that will be called "Trump's road for international peace and prosperity". The corridor will connect Azerbaijan's mainland with the autonomous region of Nakhchivan, which has been an important goal for the Azerbaijani government in the negotiations since the connection has been inactive since the 90s.

Military restrictions lifted

When announcing the agreement, Trump said it was "a great honor for me" that the route was named after him and added that he did not ask for it himself. According to a high-ranking official in the American administration, it was the Armenians who suggested the name.

The President of the United States also announced that he is lifting the restrictions on military cooperation with Azerbaijan. Parts of a law from 1992 that prohibited direct assistance to the country's government are also being repealed.

However, several American governments have made exceptions to the law since the terrorist attacks in New York in 2001 and allowed assistance, according to Politico.

Further details about the agreement have not been announced.

Long conflict

Azerbaijan and Armenia have long been in military conflict over, among other things, the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabach, which Azerbaijani forces captured in a military offensive in September 2023.

Both countries have also announced that they will nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, something that Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu has also suggested.
