The state-owned water and electricity company Regideso stated on Monday that the power outages are planned and due to "connection work", which is expected to continue until August 14.

A anonymous official at the energy department told AFP that the work on the power grid has meant that 80 percent of the normal electricity supply has been unavailable.

Four of Burundi's five provinces are affected and several neighborhoods in the capital Bujumbura are completely without electricity, water and internet. On social media, several of the country's banks announce that they cannot provide their usual services.

At Prince Regent Charles Hospital in the capital, management has urged relatives of the deceased to collect their relatives' bodies after the morgue was closed.

The problems due to the extensive power outages are also exacerbated by the fact that many generators are unusable as there is a fuel shortage in the country.
