How many prisoners were moved from the prison and how many are now being moved back is not disclosed. According to Irna, new facilities have been built on the prison grounds to accommodate the prisoners.

The move from the prison took place just one day after Israel launched an attack on the prison. According to state media, the attack took place during visiting hours.

The death toll after the attack is unclear, according to Iranian officials, 71 people were killed, of which five were prisoners. At the same time, local media claim that it involves 80 people. Among the dead are prison staff, soldiers, prisoners and visiting family members.

In connection with the attack, 75 prisoners are said to have escaped, of which 48 have either been recaptured or returned voluntarily, according to Iranian authorities.

Evin prison houses many political prisoners, including the Swedish-Iranian researcher Ahmadreza Djalali, who has been imprisoned since 2016 and is sentenced to death. Djalali was one of the prisoners who was moved at the end of June. He has been missing since then.
