Russia is to open seven embassies in Africa in the coming years, reports the Russian state news agency Tass.

The plan, presented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, is part of the country's hunt for increased influence on the continent.

In parallel with the embassies, a new sub-department within the Russian Foreign Ministry is being launched, called the "Department for Partnership with Africa".

The new embassies, including those in Niger, Sierra Leone, and Togo, follow the opening of embassies in Equatorial Guinea and Burkina Faso in 2023. The latter mission was reopened after being closed for over 30 years.

Last week, it was announced that Sudan and Russia have agreed that Russia will be allowed to open a military naval base near the port city of Port Sudan.

Last year, President Vladimir Putin promised that Russia "will continue to provide total support to our African friends".
