Calin Georgescu is being prosecuted for "false information" about the financing of the presidential election. According to the indictment, he repeatedly made false statements about the origin of the funds.
The election result in November was annulled by the judiciary due to suspicions of a Russian influence campaign on social media helping Georgescu to achieve his surprising victory.
On Wednesday, Georgescu was stopped by police in Bucharest and taken in for questioning.
”Calin Georgescu was on his way to submit his new candidacy for the presidential post”, writes his team in a Facebook post.
The previously relatively unknown Georgescu became famous overnight on Tiktok, which raised suspicions of electoral influence. He has called the annulment of the election result a "formalized coup d'état".
The first round of the presidential election in Romania will take place on May 4, and a second round on May 18 if no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the votes in the first round.
