The Social Democrats are losing ground, but still more than one in five Malmö residents – 21.9 per cent – voted for the Social Democrats in the EU election, according to preliminary figures from the Election Authority. Almost as many votes were cast for the Left Party, which with 19.5 per cent of the votes almost doubled its results compared to the EU election four years ago.
The Green Party, which has made strong gains and become the largest party in Stockholm and Lund, also had a successful election in the country's third-largest city and becomes the third-largest party with 16.8 per cent of the votes. The Moderates are losing some ground – as are the Sweden Democrats, who have lost nearly four percentage points and thus land on 10.8 per cent of Malmö residents' votes.
Voter turnout in Malmö appears to have ended up at 49.6 per cent, according to the Election Authority.
