Trump's government has announced that from August 29, it will abolish tax exemption on small packages imported into the USA. This has caused postal companies around Europe to react.

DHL in Germany will from Saturday pause its standard category for packages to the USA, an alternative that many smaller companies have used.

"Important questions have not yet been answered, including who will pay the fees and how," writes DHL in a statement.

French La Poste will pause from Monday shipments to the USA, with the exception of gifts from private individuals whose value is less than 100 euros. According to La Poste, European postal services have been given "an extremely limited timeframe to prepare". Every year, 1.6 million packages are sent from France to the USA, of which 80 percent are from companies.

Swedish Postnord will temporarily pause certain goods shipments to the USA and Puerto Rico from Saturday. Letters that do not contain goods are not affected.

Also Posti in Finland is stopping shipments from Saturday. Posti announces that this also applies to letter shipments, which often consist of authority or company documents. Customers can still send mail via other alternatives.

Postal services in Belgium, Austria, and Denmark have also taken similar measures.
