Despite several hospital visits, a heart defect was not discovered in time and the small child died. Region Sörmland has found several deficiencies that may have led to the incident, according to Eskilstuna-Kuriren.

The child was only six months old when it started vomiting and had breathing problems. After an ambulance trip to Nyköping hospital, the child was examined but the family was sent home.

After several trips to different healthcare providers, the child was finally admitted to Mälarsjukhuset in Eskilstuna, where heart failure was diagnosed and the condition worsened.

The hospital was in contact with specialists at two university hospitals, but weather problems meant that an ambulance helicopter could not take off and other problems with the transport also arose.

It took several hours before the child was driven by ambulance to specialist care in Gothenburg, but then it was too late.

The region – which has made a Lex Maria report to the Inspectorate for Health and Care – has found deficiencies in levels of competence, information provision, and care capacity.
