Olympic Games debutante finished ninth: "Has more to give"

No Swedish diver in an Olympic Games final for twelve years. The trend was broken in Paris – where Emilia Nilsson Garip finished ninth on the three-meter springboard. I know that I have more to give, says the debutante.

Anna Lindberg was the last Swedish diver in an Olympic Games final.

In London 2012, she finished tenth.

In Paris, the blue-yellow drought was over, as Emilia Nilsson Garip took one of the last final spots in the semifinal – despite back pain – and eventually finished ninth with 279.40 points.

There was more to be desired from the 21-year-old in terms of her placement and performance in the final. But overall, she was still pleased with the Summer Games in France.

My goal was the semifinal, and the fact that I made it to the final is absolutely fantastic, she says.

Were you bothered by the back pain?

Right now, it's pretty good. It was worse yesterday (Thursday). Now I just need to keep it warm and fresh until I start training again.

It didn't bother me. It was just a little energy that was lacking to do that extra bit.

Emilia Nilsson Garip is now looking forward to a short summer break from school in American Utah and a slightly longer break from diving.

Chinese diver Chen Yiwen won with 376.00 points, ahead of Maddison Keeney from Australia and her compatriot Chang Yani, who scored 343.10 and 318.75 points, respectively.
