If an athlete declines to compete for Sweden in the Finnkampen without a valid reason, the athlete may receive reduced support from the Swedish Athletics Association the following year, reports Radiosporten.
It still feels reasonable in some way. The Finnkampen is so important for the association, with the revenue it generates, says runner Andreas Almgren to Radiosporten.
The association is also introducing a bonus for participants. It is divided into four levels, where the best receive 10,000 kronor for competing in the classic competition against Finland. Those in the lowest level receive 4,000 kronor for participating in the two-day competition.
