Despite this being a more public and sensational event than usual, it ultimately appears to be a tragic suicide case concerning a highly experienced war veteran who struggled with PTSD and other problems, said FBI agent Spencer Evans at a press conference on Saturday.
The 37-year-old man, who is believed to have shot himself before the explosion on New Year's Day, was an elite soldier who had been in active service since 2006 and had served in, among other places, Afghanistan. When he died, he was on an army-approved leave of absence. Seven people were injured in the incident.
Investigators have not found anything pointing to connections with terrorist organizations, nor any signs that the 37-year-old, despite the location, would have harbored resentment towards the incoming President Donald Trump.
On the other hand, he is said to have had a long series of notes on his mobile phone about personal problems and dissatisfaction regarding political issues, including conflicts in other parts of the world.
