A man died after a incorrectly inserted venous catheter caused blood poisoning. Now, the Hospital in Landskrona has made a report according to lex Maria to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (Ivo), reports P4 Malmöhus.
The man sought acute care last summer with symptoms that were deemed to be due to heart failure. At the hospital, a venous catheter was inserted into an arm bend. The insertion led to an infection that caused blood poisoning. A few days later, the man died despite treatment.
Among the causes, according to the hospital, are high workload and low awareness of the risks associated with peripheral venous catheters.
The hospital has now introduced stricter controls of such insertions, according to P4.
