Israel Holds Key to Ending Gaza Starvation Crisis, Says Minister Dousa

The situation in Gaza is described as increasingly acute and aid organizations are warning of starvation. It is only the Israeli government that can get rid of the starvation in Gaza, says Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa (The Moderate Party).

Several aid organizations are warning that thousands in Gaza will die of starvation if emergency aid does not reach the population soon.

In addition, the EU Commission on Monday directed some of its toughest criticism to date against the Israeli government, accusing Israel of "violating human rights" and contributing to a potential famine catastrophe in Gaza.

However, they failed to reach any agreement on measures.

"Not allowed in"

Benjamin Dousa has said that the Swedish government feels restricted.

The problem is not a lack of money or a lack of trucks. The problem is that the trucks are not being let in by the Israeli government, he says.

Europe must therefore step forward and put much harder pressure on Israel to get the aid deliveries up, he continues.

Europe must take a step forward, says Dousa.

He mentions that Sweden is pushing for sanctions against individual Israeli ministers, measures regarding Israel's access to research cooperation Horizon, and measures on the trade side.

Unfortunately, it is only a handful of countries that are on the Swedish side. Then there are some that block almost everything with Hungary at the core.

Clearer pressure

For a few days now, Israel has allowed emergency aid from the air, and 200 cars with supplies are said to have been let into Gaza. But according to aid organizations, it is not enough.

We could send in several billion to the World Food Programme, but it would only lead to the warehouses in Egypt and Jordan becoming even larger. So what is most effective here and now is still for Europe to put clearer pressure on Israel, because it is only the Israeli government that can get rid of the starvation in Gaza, says Benjamin Dousa.
