At 22.38, the police received an alarm from a man in his 30s who said he had collided with an elk. But when the police arrived at the scene, the man was gone.

We find the car with deployed airbags, but the driver is not there. We then find footprints leading out onto the ice, says Magnus Jansson Klarin, the police's press spokesperson.

The police launched a large rescue operation together with the rescue service and the sea rescue. The rescue operation was discontinued at 6 am.

It is suspected that this man unfortunately ended up in the water and that he is probably no longer alive.

Relatives have been informed, according to the police.
