The police are searching with a helicopter for the two hikers who have gone missing in Sarek National Park. Relatives raised the alarm after the two, a man and a woman in their 30s, failed to make contact and could not be reached. The couple lives in Mälardalen and were supposed to have returned on Sunday.
The police have been searching on Wednesday and have tried to make contact with the hikers in various ways, but so far only the couple's car has been found.
We are working on the theory that they arrived in the area on Monday or Tuesday a week ago, says duty officer Fredrik Nilsson to TT.
The police helicopter is searching the area with the starting point from where the car was found. No ground search operation is planned yet – the national park is nearly 2,000 square kilometers in size.
Sarek National Park is located in the western part of Jokkmokk Municipality. It is the country's largest high mountain area and has the most pronounced wilderness.
