Lula expected to leave intensive care on Friday

Brazil's President Lula da Silva's second skull operation in a short time was successful, and he should be able to leave the intensive care unit on Friday, according to his medical team. The operations have been performed after a bleeding in the president's head was discovered.

The President's doctor reports that Lula is doing well both physically and mentally, and that he is awake and talking. He is expected to soon return to his duties.

If his development continues in the same direction, he is likely to be discharged from the hospital in São Paulo at the beginning of next week, and "he will gradually return to his normal activity", says doctor Roberto Kalil.

Even though Lula will be able to work, he will need relative rest for several weeks during his recovery.

It was on Monday evening, after the President had undergone a brain scan due to a headache, that it was revealed that he had a bleeding under the skull bone.

Lula da Silva was involved in a fall accident at home on October 19 and hit his head. The bleeding was a consequence of the accident, according to the doctors.
