A Palestinian source stated earlier on Monday that mediators have proposed an initial ceasefire of 60 days in exchange for the release of hostages in two stages.
It is a framework for getting negotiations started on a permanent ceasefire, says the source.
Israel has not responded to the proposal. There are also big question marks about whether Israel could consider such a plan. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently signaled that he demands the entire hostage group be released at once.
Of the Israelis taken as hostages when Hamas started the war in 2023, approximately 20 people are believed to still be alive in the Gaza Strip.
Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz says, according to The Times of Israel, that Hamas's "willingness to discuss an agreement on releasing hostages only comes because they are afraid that we are seriously intending to capture the city of Gaza”.
Talks about a ceasefire have been held in both Cairo and Qatar over the past week.
