Russia's prosecutor's office has motivated the decision by accusing EVZ of having "a politically biased anti-Russian stance" in its work.
The "undesirable" status forces organizations to shut down their operations in Russia and means that Russians who work for, finance or cooperate with them can be subject to prosecution.
However, the foundation has since March ceased its operations in Russia and Belarus as the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine has made its operations in the countries more difficult.
Since its inception in 2000, the foundation has paid compensation to at least 100,000 victims of the Nazis' crimes and their descendants in Russia. Several German organizations have suffered a similar fate as EVZ in Russia in recent years.
