New rainfall on Monday hinders search and rescue efforts in monsoon-affected areas in northern Pakistan.

According to the authorities in the country, around 200 people are still missing after the heavy rains, which have so far claimed nearly 350 human lives.

The deadly monsoon rains have since Thursday caused floods and landslides that have swept away entire villages and buried people under debris and demolished houses. The majority of the deaths are reported from the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the authorities are now warning of new floods for several days.

Hundreds of rescue workers and volunteers are racing against time, but the hope of finding survivors is dwindling and the search efforts were stopped on Monday morning by new rains.

Dozens of bodies are still buried under mud and stones, and can only be recovered with heavy machinery. The provisional roads that were built to reach the area have however been destroyed again by the new rains, says Nisar Ahmad, volunteer in Buner, one of the most affected regions.

Since the heavy monsoon rains began in June, at least 650 people have died and more than 900 have been injured. India has also been affected by heavy monsoon rains, where more than 60 people have lost their lives.
