Due to the mining activities and urban transformation in Kiruna, LKAB and the Municipality of Kiruna are initiating a dialogue on how the large mining company will replace several buildings in the city that are affected by the operations.
Among other things, the agreement includes the sports hall, two schools, and the water tower.
"This agreement creates conditions for continued development of the community. We want to give the municipality the best opportunities to plan its community-critical activities," says Stefan Hämäläinen, Director of Community Development at LKAB, in a press release.
In recent years, damage has occurred to community-critical buildings located outside the so-called impact area.
"The messages we are now receiving from LKAB are fundamentally positive, as we have been seeking them for a long time regarding municipal properties that are located just adjacent to the current deformation line," says Councilor Mats Taaveniku.
The total compensation will cost LKAB around 2 billion kronor.
