Save Water Now to Prepare for Low Autumn Levels in Sweden

Drying wells, brown lawns and watering bans. Parts of Sweden continue to struggle with low water levels. It is good to start saving water today so that the well has capacity all the way until autumn, says Anders Retzner, hydrogeologist at the Geological Survey of Sweden.

It is primarily in Götaland and eastern Svealand that the groundwater levels are unusually low. In several places in Svealand and along the Norrland coast, the level is classified as low.

It is the small water reservoirs that are worst affected, i.e. mainly households with their own well.

During the spring, it rained a little and the spring is the most important period for the summer's groundwater level, says Retzner.

The poor starting position that we entered the summer with is still with us.

The scattered showers that have broken off the weeks of high summer weather make no difference for the replenishment of the water reserves.

Most of it disappears through evaporation or the plants absorb the water. Therefore, the groundwater levels will continue to fall for a while, as they always do at this time of year.

Low groundwater reserves are normally present during the summer. The spring rain fills up the reservoirs underground and when the summer is nearing its end, they have reached their lowest level. During the autumn, new water flows into the ground again.

But this year, the levels are below normal.

Urban areas are supplied with water from larger water reservoirs managed by municipal companies. But over a million permanent residences and as many holiday homes have drinking water supply from their own well.

If you have your own well, you should have foresight and think back to previous summers if there were problems with the water supply then.

Our forecasts show that it can be a similar summer this year, says Anders Retzner.
