At least 200,000 liters of contaminated water have leaked out in Gothenburg's harbor, reports SVT News West.
This concerns wastewater from cleaned ship tanks that leaked out from a cistern in Skarvikshamnen. The leak was discovered by employees in mid-August.
The water has been found to contain, among other things, PFAS and other chemicals. It is unclear how much of it has reached the nearby Göta River.
It is clear that if it seeps into the ground, it will spread. To what extent and in what scope, we cannot assess now, says Gunnar Edlund, unit manager at the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland, to SVT.
According to St1 Refinery, which used the tank, a total of 500 cubic meters of water leaked out, of which they managed to suck up approximately 300 cubic meters.
It is regrettable, but we have taken the measures that can be taken. We have brought in expert help to ensure that we have done everything as quickly as possible, says Erica Samuelsson, communications officer at St1.
The incident is being investigated as a suspected environmental crime.
