Kristersson: It could be sabotage

To destroy telecommunications and other types of cables is an effective way to paralyze parts of society, notes Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party). But it is too early to say whether the two cable breaks in the Baltic Sea were caused by sabotage.

We are taking precautions because this could very well be intentional sabotage, but it's nothing we know yet, I don't think I'll speculate about it.

Now the destroyed cables will be thoroughly examined, both police-wise and internationally, he emphasizes.

We live in a time when you have to take every such risk very seriously. We've seen sabotage before, so we take it very seriously.

Work has been ongoing since before to better protect the underwater cables, for example through surveillance. Russia's war against Ukraine shows how important this is, the Prime Minister believes.

Modern society is vulnerable and we're also learning from Ukraine that it's not just military installations that are often attacked during military conflicts, but also completely civilian things that are fundamental for society to function.
