But the plan also includes increasing energy from nuclear power, a power source that Japan has scaled back on since the reactor accidents in Fukushima in 2011, caused by an earthquake with a subsequent tsunami.

The plan is updated every third year and according to the new plan, renewable energy should account for between 40 and 50 percent of the total energy needs in the country by 2040.

The current goal states 30-40 percent renewable and around 20 percent from nuclear power. The country has tried to reduce the share of nuclear power since the Fukushima disaster in 2011.

But going forward, Japan will focus on developing a new generation of reactors, according to the plan.
