Frustrated - but at the same time not surprised

The Paralympic hero Nicolina Pernheim Goodrich is forced to end her athletic career since the City of Gothenburg has withdrawn her escort service. I get frustrated but at the same time not surprised, says Åsa Llinares Norlin, chairperson of the Swedish Paralympic Committee.

I sat next to Niccolina at the association's closing dinner after the Paralympics in Paris. Then she told me just how many children with visual impairments who want to start with judo. She is such an incredible role model. We really need people like her in parasports. When you do it this way and prevent her from practicing her sport... It's distressing.

LLinares Norlin cannot emphasize enough how much Niccolina Pernheim Goodrich means to parasports.

She doesn't give up, she had just given birth and works with children with visual impairments in her daily life. She is such an incredible role model in so many different ways.

One of the reasons the Municipality of Gothenburg gives is that they think she is too independent. Pernheim Goodrich has described that it is precisely thanks to the escort that she can be independent.

One can be independent, but still need help with certain parts. That's the whole idea of support of this kind. It feels counterproductive to withdraw it on that basis, says Åsa Llinares Norlin.

The association itself cannot help individual athletes with support.

The association cannot provide support for individual athletes. During the European Championship, we can add a few extra leaders to the total number of athletes to provide increased support.

Corrected: In an earlier version, Åsa Llinares Norlin's title was incorrectly stated. Correct is chairman of the Swedish Paralympic Committee.
