"I am free for the first time in 25 years", writes Berth Milton in a text message to Expressen.

The tax debt arose when Berth Milton left Sweden for Spain at the end of the 1980s, at the same time as his company earned billions. But the Tax Authority considered that he had ties to Sweden and taxed him with 677 million kronor plus a tax surcharge of 150 million, writes Expressen.

No money was ever collected by the Enforcement Authority. In 2015, half of the debt was written off, which had then increased further with interest. And now everything is being written off since the debt is statute-barred.
