”All other aspects of the agreement remain the same”, writes Trump on his platform Truth Social.
The message comes just hours before the former 90-day tariff pause – which the US and China, the world's two largest economies, agreed on in May – would have expired.
The tariff pause meant that the US, after the shock increase to 145 percent in the spring, now has tariffs on Chinese imports of 30 percent. China has lowered from 125 to 10 percent.
China extends
China is also extending its side of the tariff pause and thus maintaining the 10 percent tariffs. This is stated in a joint statement from the tariff talks between the two countries held in Stockholm in July, which the state news agency New China (Xinhua) has published, reports AFP.
In Trump's executive order, which has been published on the White House website, the position is repeated that there are "large and persistent" American trade deficits and that they pose a threat to the US's national security.
In the presidential order, the ongoing discussions between Beijing and Washington are mentioned.
More time for unresolved issues
”Through these discussions, China continues to take important steps towards addressing non-reciprocal trade agreements and addressing the US's concerns regarding economic and national security issues”, it says further.
With the new deadline, the countries get more time for unresolved issues such as Trump's tariffs related to fentanyl, Chinese state support for companies, Beijing's purchase of Russian and Iranian oil, and disagreements regarding American business operations in China.
The new extension means that the tariff pause now expires just after midnight in Washington on November 10 – which corresponds to just after 6 am Swedish time.
