A fire broke out on Tuesday about a hundred meters underground in a silver mine in Sotkamo in eastern Finland, reports Finnish media.
The fire started in a truck during the morning and there has been smoke development in the mine.
Some people who were down there managed to get up to ground level, but a group of 18 people remained underground. They locked themselves in a shelter while the extinguishing work was ongoing, according to the mining company Sotkamo Silver.
In the afternoon, the evacuation began.
Everything is fine with them and there is no acute danger, says the company's CEO Mikko Jalasto to Yle.
Sotkamo Silver is Finland's only silver mine.
