According to the police, it was a powerful firework that first exploded and then started a fire.
It was placed in the stairwell outside an apartment door by an unknown person. The hypothesis is that it was used to try to harm someone, says the police's press spokesperson Patric Fors.
Jumped from balcony
A 35-year-old man was in the apartment when the fire broke out and was injured when he jumped from the balcony. He has been taken to hospital by ambulance with some form of leg fracture.
According to the police, it is too early to say whether the man was the intended target.
The firework was placed outside his door, but we'll see if it's something else, says Fors, adding that no one else was injured in connection with the incident.
No suspect
The incident is now being investigated as attempted murder, gross reckless endangerment, and violation of the law on hazardous and explosive goods. Early on Friday morning, no one had been arrested.
The police were alerted to the incident just after midnight, on Friday morning. Residents in the area heard loud bangs in connection with the fire, according to Sydsvenskan, which was the first to report on the incident.
About 40 people who live in the building were evacuated, but most are expected to be able to return soon, except for those living on the floor that was most affected. Malmö municipality is helping to find alternative accommodation.
